Sport for Peace

August 8, 2015

The Grand Prix driver crossed the finishing line beneath the colourful banner stretching across the width of the oil and rubber smeared tarmac below to win the Monaco Grand Prix in the year that was 2009. Exhausted (both mentally and physically) and saturated with sweat, the champion driver raised his arms, in celebration, glorious triumph, knowing that he had driven his last.. and the best ever race in his long and illustrious career.

As the champion of the world drove under the banner proclaiming ‘Sport for Peace’ and received the chequered flag to the silent roars of the crowd, he also knew that a new chapter in his rather eventful life, yet also his greatest challenge lay in the days ahead.

SENNA KNEW WINNING ISN’T EVERYTHING

July 21, 2015

Senna loved winning too, of course: he was obsessed by it as champions are. But what separates him is that he came to realise there was more to life – and that is why people are making films about him today. He had the visionary mystique to know in a world of plenty you do not have to have ‘have-nots’ to have ‘haves’.

His trainer Josef Leberer told me: “During my first year with Ayrton we were driving through Sao Paulo when we saw a favela and I asked how he felt when he saw these people. He said it was very hard for him and it hurt a lot, but that you have to be powerful to effect any real change and he was not there yet.

“What is success?
To laugh often and much;
To win the respect of intelligent people
and the affection of children;
To earn the appreciation of honest critics
and endure the betrayal of false friends;
To appreciate the beauty;
To find the best in others;
To leave the world a bit better, whether by
a healthy child, a garden patch
Or a redeemed social condition;
To know even one life has breathed
easier because you have lived;
This is to have succeeded.”
Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803 – 1882)

SPORT FOR PEACE

This short extract from craig’s new manuscript, ‘Peace Lives WITHIN’ is based on the ground idea that peace begins within. Like Aladdin’s lamp, the universe responds to the myriads of our individual consciousnesses. The keys, the solutions to a more peaceful world are based around some of histories greatest witnesses to peace: ‘noble spirited and great souled’ figures (‘messengers’) like Jesus, Gandhi, Buddha, Moses and Mohammed (and also evidenced in the inspiring words of Martin Luther King). In their quest for world peace, they all discover that each one of them has to be the change they want to see in the world (‘Unity in Truth’) and that’s the common message we can ALL learn from these ‘masters’ teachings.

*
The right words can conquer the world: through using the power of words as a transformative tool for justice and reconciliation.

“All it takes for evil to succeed, is that good men do nothing”

“Those who stand up for justice will always be on the right side of history.”

– Dr Martin Luther King, Jnr

SPORT TRANSCENDS ALL BOUNDARIES

The great power (and passion) of sport to unite (union between nations through sport). It connects sports-people beyond race, different faiths and beyond ethnic divides
…so helping heal divisions and building bridges between peoples, cultures and nations. Most importantly, sport gives hope to people.

What unites us, our common humanity is far greater than what divides us.

“We firmly believe that sport can bring the world together. Sport has shown this on countless occasions in the past and we are committed to the positive values found in sport performance and passion, teamwork and fair play.”
– Herbert Hainer, Chief Executive of the Adidas
sports shoe company.

“Say ‘No’ to racism!”

“As congregations, communities and nations, we must join hands to fight the cancer of terrorism. Terrorist bombs don’t discriminate on the base of race or religion.”
– Irfan Yusuf, a Sydney (Australia) lawyer, currently writing a book titled ‘Once Were Radicals’

Each ONE of us CAN be a “champion of peace in a time of war”.

“Ideals are like stars; you will not succeed in touching them with your hands, but like the sea-faring man on the ocean desert of waters, you choose them as your guides and following them, you reach your destiny.”
Carl Schurz (US General and politician (born in Germany 1829-1906)

“Success is doing the best you can, in as many ways as you can.
It is being just and honest and true – not in a few things,
but in everything you do.

Always look ahead and never look back,
believe you can make all your
dreams come true.
Always believe in the best you can be
and have
faith in the things that you do.

Forget about the mistakes you’ve made yesterday,
the lessons you learn will prove valuable for today…
Never give up and think that you’re through…
for there’s always tomorrow and a chance to begin brand new.

It is in dreaming the greatest dreams
and seeking the highest goals…
that we build the brightest tomorrows.

There is no limit to the goals you can attain,
or the success you can achieve…
your possibilities are as endless as your
dreams.

Whatever it is that you seek in life,
whatever your dreams and what you hope to achieve,
whatever you try to reach – whatever you plan…
can all be yours – if you only believe you can!”
– Larry S. Chengges

“Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird
That cannot fly.
Hold fast to dreams
For when dreams go
Life is a barren field
Frozen with snow.”

– Langston Hughes

“Let us build bridges rather than barriers, openness rather than
walls. Rather than borders, let us look at distant horizons
together…in the common spirit of the value and dignity of a
shared personhood as citizens of planet earth. We here in
far-off New Zealand share the common
bond of humanity: the pain, the sadness, suffering and joy
inherant in the human condition, no matter where in the world
you may live.”
– craig (3rd September 2004)

“It is from numberless diverse acts of courage and belief that human history is shaped. Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.

Robert Francis Kennedy ( U.S. attorney general and adviser, 19251968)

“Whilst we can (and should) celebrate our differences *, let not our beliefs divide us, but rather let our shared humanity define and unite us… as citizens on and sharing planet earth.”

* after all, it’s what makes us unique, as individuals, nations and cultures!
